Beau Leroux ripped in a goal late in the first half and the San Jose Earthquakes made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over the host Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.

Daniel made six saves to record his fourth shutout of the season. He has allowed just one goal this season for the Earthquakes (4-1-0, 12 points)

The Whitecaps (4-1-0, 12 points) outscored their first four MLS opponents 14-1 before succumbing Saturday.

Yohei Takaoka made one save for Vancouver.

Leroux's goal came in the second minute of first-half stoppage time and the sequence began with a corner kick.

Emmanuel Sabbi of the Whitecaps attempted to clear the ball but Leroux was outside the box and won the fight for the ball. He immediately drilled a hard right-footer into the top-right corner of the net.

The goal was the first of the season for the 22-year-old Leroux. He had five last season as a rookie.

Vancouver only had one good scoring chance during the six minutes of second-half stoppage time. Kenji Cabrera delivered a hard shot that went wide right of the net in the second minute of stoppage time.

Vancouver held a 11-7 edge in shots. The Whitecaps put six on target against just two for San Jose.

Former Germany 2018 World Cup teammates Thomas Muller (Whitecaps) and Timo Werner (Earthquakes) squared off for the first time in MLS play. Neither player took a shot in the match.

Daniel made big saves in back-to-back minutes in the first half to keep the match scoreless.

Aziel Jackson's hard left-footed smash was stopped by Daniel in the 29th minute. Then star Brian White had a great chance for Vancouver one minute later but his close-range header was knocked away by Daniel's right hand.

In the second half, White's left-footed shot in the 68th minute was stopped by Daniel.
